The END Fund is a leading, catalytic partner in the global movement to control and eliminate the most common NTDs by 2020. In order to meet the global health community’s 2020 goals, over one billion treatments need to be delivered to countries annually and hundreds of thousands of community health workers need to be mobilized to deliver medicines. The largest mass drug administration program in human history is poised to be launched.
There are significant partnerships in place to make this happen. Pharmaceutical companies are donating medicines. Ministries of Health have launched their national plans and are working to secure increased local resources. Non-governmental organizations are scaling up capacity to work alongside disease-endemic countries to provide the technical assistance and support needed to deliver treatment programs at scale. And literally hundreds of millions of people are already receiving the medicines they need through programs that reach the poorest, most remote areas of the world.
But the work has just begun. The January 2013 London Declaration on NTDs Anniversary report announced that there still exists a $300 million global annual funding gap to meet the 2020 goals and ensure that all people at risk of these diseases receive the treatment they need. A roadmap, the medicines and the technical support will not go far enough if funds are not identified, pooled and directed to where they can have maximum impact. This is where the END Fund comes in.
The END Fund specializes in understanding the NTD space – its players, needs, gaps, and points of leverage where a small investment can yield outsized returns.
The END Fund is being widely hailed as an innovative financing mechanism to pool and leverage funds to invest in NTD programs across a large number of local and international implementing partners, government and academic partners. To see the end of NTDs in our lifetime requires a simple, streamlined approach to resource mobilization and allocation. The END Fund was founded as an answer for a call for such a mechanism.
There is so much room in this growing global movement to end diseases in this coming decade that have plagued humanity for thousands of years. This is time for more individuals, companies and foundations to join us and help make history. It is possible now to truly solve one of the most compelling health crises of our time.
